The European Commission is looking for views on its future strategy for growth and jobs.
Views are sought on how the EU can increase productivity and competitiveness while at the same time fostering social cohesion and environmentally friendly policies.
The EU 2020 strategy seeks to establish a “sustainable social market economy” which leads the way in new markets and with innovative services and products.
The document adds however that building Europe’s strength as a market economy will allow for leadership in setting stronger environmental and labour standards.
Higher levels of labour market inclusion through education, reliable social protection and genuine gender equality are all highlighted as objectives.
Additionally, the strategy aims at developing alternatives to road transport, low-carbon electricity generation and greater energy independence for Europe as a whole.
We are keen to hear your views as to whether the EU can achieve these socially responsible goals whilst driving forward plans to increase industry competitiveness in world markets.
“We should [place] particular emphasis on market access, access to energy and raw materials, and progress on environmental and social objectives,” the document says.
The commission is expected to adopt a communication on the EU 2020 strategy during the Spring European Council early in 2010.

Please note that the deadline for responding to this consultation is 15 January 2010.
