An updated report from EuroHealthNet presents fresh evidence of obesity prevention projects which go beyond a focus on diet and lifestyle.
Many of the projects are taking a new look consider the socio-economic and cultural determinants of the obesity problem.
The report, “Focusing on Obesity Through a Health Equity Lens”, demonstrates the link between health inequalities and rising rates of obesity.
It also sets out how existing measures to tackle the condition might be able to take this into account.
The report is being published for the EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, which aims to encourage voluntary action by governments, business and NGOs.
The author of the report, Yoline Kuipers, has updated the new edition which now contains close to 100 projects, from the international level to local community initiatives.
The findings reveal the limitations of focusing on lifestyles and behaviour rather than on the economic and social factors which hinder efforts to reduce obesity.
Furthermore, the report adds weight to calls for a stronger focus on health inequalities across all sectors.
The innovative projects identified present some of the starting points for considering the role of health inequalities as they relate to the obesity problem.
