Looking ahead to the Treaty of Lisbon

Full ratification of the EU Treaty of Lisbon is expected soon, but how will this affect health law?

This is the topic of a briefing paper by the European Health Management Association (EHMA), which looks at what the treaty could mean for European public health policies in the future.

Although the general idea of where the EU can take action in the field of health remains the same, there are several potential changes to the way this is carried out, says EHMA.

The Treaty of Lisbon includes the possibility for extra steps by the EU to protect human health, to support the fight against cross-border health scourges and for an emphasis on the right to health, the document says.

EHMA also outlines possible new measures on consulting civil society and dialogue with representative associations, should the treaty be ratified.

The full EHMA briefing paper is available on the EHMA website here.
