European conference 'Dignity for the frail old'
2 - 5 September 2010
Bergen, Norway
The conference "Dignity for the Frail Old" deals with questions about the future of all European citizens.Situations often occur in our lives, which makes it difficult or impossible for us to take responsibility for own behaviour; make decisions; or participate in society. Growing very old and frail is such a situation, resulting in increased vulnerability and dependency. Frail older people have a right to receive support and care, and they deserve protection. Dignity and choice should be the foundational principles on which all care provision for frail older people is based.
The aging of society is a fact, which ought to be celebrated, although many commentators see this demographic change as a burden and a risk for European societies. Viewed in this way, Dignity and choice for the frailest citizens are especially endangered and as a consequence the quality of care for frail older people is also at risk.
This raises the question: In what type of society are we going to live in the coming decades?
