WHO Commission on the Social Determinants of Health

The WHO Commission on the social determinants of health was established to support countries and global health partners to address the social factors leading to ill health and inequities.

DETERMINE project

The DETERMINE project (2007–2010) establishes an EU Consortium for Action on the Socio-economic Determinants of Health (SDH), which aims to take forward the work of the WHO Commission on the SDH (CSDH) in an EU context. It brings together over 50 health bodies, public health and health promotion institutes, governments and various other organizations from 26 European countries.

The Determine project has produced a European Portal for Action on Health Equity, a tool to promote health equity amongst different socio-economic groups in the European Union. Here, you can find information on policies and interventions to promote health equity within and between the countries of Europe, via the socio-economic determinants of health.

Business in the Community’s res­ponse to Health Inequalities

Business in the Community is working with the Department of Health to engage relevant business partners and develop a framework for business action on the social determinants of health, opening a dialogue with the private sector on issues in the UK.

PAHO Equity List

EQUITY list is run by the Equity, Health and Human Development of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Its purpose is to share public health information of international significance that enables policy-makers, researchers and practitioners to be more effective and improves health, particularly among disadvantaged populations. The information is posted in English, Spanish and/or Portuguese, according to the language of the source.

EUPHIX – EU Public Health Information & Knowledge System

EUPHIX is a web-based knowledge system for health professionals, policy makers and others. It presents structured European public health information, giving a special insight into similarities and differences between EU Member States.

European project – Getting Evidence into Practice

A project as part of a collaboration among key national agencies and international networks for health promotion in the form of a European Evidence Consortium. The project Getting Evidence into Practice (running period February 2004-July 2005) has been focussing on health promotion, public health and prevention interventions.

HEM – Closing the Gap – Reducing Premature Mortality

A project which analyses the gap in adult premature mortality between the ‘EU15’ and new member states and applicant countries, including recommendations for improving the health of the EU population and for diminishing inequalities in health.

The Equity Gauge

The Global Equity Gauge Alliance participates in and supports an active approach to monitoring health inequalities and promoting equity within and between societies. The Alliance currently includes 11 member-teams, called Equity Gauges, located in 10 countries in the Americas, Africa and Asia.

Health Impact Assessment Gateway

The Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) represents and co-ordinates a network of 12 public health observatories (PHOs) working across the five nations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It is the focus for joint public health intelligence work with organisations across these nations, and those working in Europe and beyond.
