The accessibility and affordability of care is a major issue in ageing societies. All EU countries have to handle this issue, although the increase in costs is uneven and financing and organization vary widely. The latest budgetary projections of the European Commission demonstrate the serious risks that countries face when they don’t succeed to reform. The Dutch experience with reforms in health care shows that great reforms are possible.
